How to use the number cards

  1. Print and cutPrint one card per player. Cut along the dashed lines; card stock holds up better than paper if kids are playing.
  2. Draw from a hatFold the cards and let each guest draw one as they put their gift on the pile.
  3. Play in orderNumber 1 opens the first gift. Everyone after can open a new gift or steal one that's already open.

Turn order in one minute

The numbers only decide who goes when. Going later is an advantage, because you see more gifts before choosing, which is why player 1 traditionally gets a last swap once every gift is open. Steal limits, frozen gifts and the other rules are in the white elephant rules. If you'd rather not handle paper at all, the white elephant generator draws the order with names, shows it on the TV and tracks every steal.

Questions

How do white elephant numbers work?

Each player draws one number when they arrive. Number 1 opens the first gift, number 2 goes next and can open or steal, and so on up to the highest number. Because player 1 never got the chance to steal, most groups let them make one final swap at the end.

How many numbers do I need?

One per player, so the same as the number of gifts. Print a couple of spares if people tend to turn up late; just remove the extra numbers before the draw.

How many cards fit on a page?

You choose: 6 large cards, 12 medium cards or 20 small cards per page. With 12 per page, numbers 1 to 50 take 5 pages. Each card has dashed cut lines.

Can I save the cards as a PDF?

Yes. Press Print, then choose Save as PDF as the printer. Turn off headers and footers in the print settings for clean pages.

Do I need to print anything?

No. Use Draw on screen to shuffle the numbers and reveal them one at a time, for example on the TV. For the full game with names, steals and frozen gifts, use the white elephant generator.

Does the on-screen draw repeat numbers?

No. It shuffles 1 to N once, then reveals that shuffled list in order, so every number comes up exactly once.
